Silent Hunter 5 is a simulation game. It has been developed and optimized for Microsoft Windows and released on 4 November 2012. It has been developed by Ubisoft Reflections and published by Ubisoft. The game was created by David Nuñez, the creator of Silent Hunter III: Wolves of the Pacific and Silent Hunter IV: Blackjack, its precursor games from the series. Developer with a team of more than 12 people including programmers, artists, animators, designers and producers began to design this release in March 2010 at Ubisoft's Montreal studio with assistance from Silent Hunter IV publisher Ubisoft Shanghai. The game contains more than 100 systems of convoy Commander, AI-controlled ships, sonar, radar types, torpedoes. It also contains thousands of ship models, models of other sea vehicles and other objects in various degrees of detail that have been fully redesigned to provide a smooth level of verisimilitude. The game was released on Russian market in December 2012 by Astrum Production Studio. The game was published under the name Silent Hunter 5: Gold Edition. The retail version includes DLCs while free download for manual installation lacks the DLCs and includes only two official addons (Koltsoy and Port Lligat), both developed by Ubisoft Shanghai. DLCs include: "Silent Hunter 5: Gold Edition" is the only retail version of the game in Russian market. Game's Producer Alexey Vasilyev has released a number of videos showing "Gold Edition" features and gameplay in Russian and English languages. Astrum Production Studio refused release CD-ROM version, in favour of digital download and DVD-ROM with manual installation. The game was released on Steam digital distribution platform on 19 October 2012; however, Steam was not ready to support multiplayer at that time and thus the multiplayer mode was removed from this version. The multiplayer feature returned on February 26, 2013 via patch 1.4 update. For the first two weeks, the game was available for free. On April 1, 2013, Ubisoft officially announced Silent Hunter 5: Gold Edition for Windows 8. The game was officially released on April 1, 2013 at 20:00 CET. Silent Hunter 5: Gold Edition received multiple "Game of the Year" awards including "PC Gamer" and "GameStar". It received a score of 93/100 on Metacritic and 97% on GameRankings. Silent Hunter 5 has been criticized for its lack of campaign missions and weak narrative. Some FPS mechanics were also criticized such as the use of a tutorial system and lack of cover system in most missions.
